My Love For Music Is A Thing Of The Past
Have you ever been in a public space and an old song comes on over the speaker system and you can't resist singing along? This is me all the time. All. The. Time.
Gem of a Jam is a term of endearment I use for such songs and albums that may have been buried in the epochs of time but are always remembered in my heart and soul. My goal with this blog is to remind you of the Gems of Jams of yesterday and to inspire you to discover the artists that came before. Music, like fashion, is cyclical--a new sound comes out to a new generation, but little does the new generation know that the "new sound" they're hearing possesses the masterstroke of the musical artists that came before they were glimmers in their parents' eyes.
Before there was Sara Bareilles, there was Carole King. Like NSync, Backstreet Boys and One Direction? Get into the boys from Jersey Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. If Electronic Dance Music makes you wanna pop Molly, then Disco surely would've had you snorting cocaine. While Destiny's Child was telling men to pay their "bills, bills, bills," Diana Ross and the Supremes were telling guys that they "can't hurry love."
Good music doesn't have to be a thing of the past. In fact, Music is one of the few occurrences where it is ok to live in the past. There is much to be learned from the artists of yesteryear, inasmuch as we still learn from the great Classical composers. My intention is to introduce you to a classic artist and link them to who they influenced today.
Allow me to introduce you to yesterday's music.
